I don't know what we were thinking when we said we would take another dog. Not just a dog, but a puppy who is not yet potty-trained. It was his blue eyes and his grey soft coat that won us over. Not to mention his melancholoy spirit and love of cuddling. Thankfully, we set it on terms of fostering to see how it would go.
Well, Blue was his name and somehow is just stuck. He is the prettiest boy I have seen in a long time. He is a blue-nose pure bred pit bull. Although many people have silly reservations and slanted views on the breed - pit bulls are just dogs like every other breed.
The thing is, most people go through life never really understanding dogs. They are really not too different than people. Ultimately they just want to be taken care of and loved - isn't that what we all want? It doesn't matter the breed in a dog, as much as the breeding. The way a dog is raised has everything to do with the tendencies it will display and what it has been taught to do and how to behave.
Take Ginger for instance. She is a short-haired mini dachshund and a very keen girl. She was not raised to fight badgers as her breed was originally bred for. Instead, she is a lovable snuggler who loves to be around her mommy. She was taught not to bark incessively, not to chew things, not to pee in the house (although we occasionally are still working on this one), not to jump up on people, not to hate bathtime, but instead to sit, laydown, turnaround, roll over, get in her chair, get down, dance on her legs, and just be adorable. She is adorable and is a very good dog. She also learned not to get car sick and now loves to put her head out the window while we drive.
It's all about breeding.
